President’s Message
The Executive Committee has been working on a number of initiatives since the last newsletter. We have adopted the Chapter’s budget for 2004, which includes funds dedicated to a serious effort to advance legislation that would upgrade our licensing from a title act to a full practice act. To that end, much of what we are planning has a strategic link to building support for such legislation with other organizations. For example, the 2004 Annual Meeting will include a session on stormwater management given by representatives from NJDEP, a session on “design for active living” given by health professionals which relates good design to public health and a session on environmental commissions given by an staff member of the Association Of New Jersey Environmental Commissions. All of these organizations are potential supporters of our upgrade effort, along with possible allies such as the New Jersey Planning Officials, New Jersey League of Municipalities, NJAPA, etc.

Landscape Architecture Month this year is planned to also send a message. We are moving forward with our banner project and hope to partner with the students of the Rutgers LA Program by sponsoring a design challenge that will result in a design for the street banners we hope to place on the PSE&G light standards along West State Street in Trenton during April and the first half of May. Our 2004 legislative breakfast is being planned for the same period in May when the legislators return from their break and we again plan to have the awards exhibit on display in the State House during that period. Our lobbying effort will begin in earnest when the new legislature takes office soon thereafter.

We trust that NJASLA members will answer the call when it is time to mobilize for this licensing upgrade push later this year. You will be able to contribute to the effort by committing some of your precious time to contact your local state senator or assemblyman and communicate the reasons why landscape architects advance the quality of life by designing for “health”, designing for “safety” and designing for the “public welfare”.

EDRA and Places Announce Design, Planning and Research Awards
The Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) and the design journal, Places, announce the seventh year of their award program that recognizes excellence in environmental design research and practice today. Awards are given in three categories:

  1. Places research awards recognize exemplary projects that investigate the relationship between physical form, design and human behavior or experience. All types of research about the design and use of places can be nominated—including projects that document the form or perception of places or landscapes, evaluate the use or manage-ment of places, or provide background for new designs or plans.
  2. Places design awards recognize completed projects that demonstrate excellence as human environments. Projects from all disciplines— including architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, public art, interior design and environmental graphic design—can be entered.
  3. Places planning awards recognize proposals for the future design, use or management of a place. Plans can consider a variety of issues, such as urban design, preservation, environmental manage-ment, community development, facilities planning, and visioning.

The jurors for the seventh annual EDRA/Places awards are:

  • Raymond Gastil, Executive Director, Van Alen Institute, New York
  • Roberta Gratz, author, The Living City and Cities Back from the Edge, New York
  • Mary Miss, artist, New York City
  • Jack Nasar, AICP, Professor of City Planning, Ohio State Univ.
  • Ken Smith, ASLA; Ken Smith Landscape Architects; Harvard University
  • James Timberlake, FAIA; Kieran-Timberlake Architects; University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia

The EDRA/Places Awards are unique in the ever-expanding universe of award programs. Their primary concern is for good places and how people inhabit them. They invite participation from a range of design and research disciplines, recognizing projects whose significance extends beyond any one profession or field. And they emphasize a link between research and practice, demonstrating how a careful understanding of human interaction with place can inspire design.

The awards program reflects the related missions of EDRA and Places. EDRA, a national organization of design professionals, social scientists, scholars and practitioners, was founded in 1968. Its conferences and publications explore the relationship between people and their physical surroundings, suggesting how environmental design can be more responsive to human needs.

The journal, Places, covers architecture, landscape architecture, city design and environmental art. Its goal is to shift the debate about design from the discussion of design projects as singular, visual objects to the consequences design has in the environments that surround people’s lives. Places is published by the Design History Foundation and sponsored by Pratt Institute and the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley.

Fourth Annual Land Ethics Symposium: Creative Approaches For Ecological Landscaping
Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve presents its Fourth Annual Land Ethics Symposium: Creative Approaches for Ecological Landscaping on Thursday, February 19, 2004. This stimulating and informative Symposium will focus on ways to create low-maintenance, economical, and ecologically balanced landscapes using native plants and restoration techniques. These landscapes solve site problems, and offer environmentally friendly, practical and attractive results.

The Symposium is geared toward landscape architects, designers, contractors and other members of the landscape industry, environmental consultants, land planners, managers and developers, and state/municipal officials. The program offers in-depth, useful presentations by regional experts. New this year is an interactive panel/audience discussion. Featured speakers include Tavis Dockwiller, a landscape architect with Rolf Sauer & Partners, Ltd, Philadelphia, and visiting lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania, who will show projects both large and small that highlight principles of sustainable site design. Keith Bowers, landscape architect and principal of Biohabitats, Inc., will explain how to plan and implement a successful native re-vegetation and ecological restoration plan. Bill Cullina, nursery manager and propagator for The New England Wild Flower Society, will discuss the best native trees, shrubs and vines for challenging situations. Stephanie Cohen, Director of the Landscape Arboretum and former professor at Temple University Ambler, will illustrate tough and attractive native perennials for commercial sites.

A panel discussion will focus on ways to successfully work with planning commissions, open space programs, local townships, conservancies and neighbors as well as the client. Panelists include: Keith Bowers (see above), Nancy Minich, landscape architect and principal of NAM Planning and Design, LLC., Lumberville, Pennsylvania; Kent Baird, Program Coordinator for the Bucks County Open Space Program, Program Director Municipal Open Space Program and Program Director for the Natural Areas Program; and Karen Budd, President of The Tinicum Conservancy and consultant for The Nature Conservancy.
